## The neighborhood Located around 25km to the west of central Lisbon, Cascais is a charming coastal holiday town with exquisite beaches and fun, friendly atmosphere. While Cascais may once have been a small fishing village, the decision of King Luís to take his summer retreats there from the mid 19th-Century meant that the Portuguese aristocracy built mansions and villas to accommodate themselves as they followed the royal court. Unsurprisingly the beaches in the town are both very beautiful and very popular so it’s best to arrive early to secure a spot on the sand in high season. Casicais is also a great place from which to take a day trip inland.
