In 1501, construction began on the Jeronimus Monestary in Lisbon. It took 100 years to build. During the same year the Quinta da Armada was built by one of the skippers who accompanied Vasco da Gama to the Horn of Africa. In 2017, the Quinta da Armada was acquired by the American artist, Andrew Hart Adler who currently lives in Cape Town. The irony wasn't lost on him. Over the centuries, there had been additions to the Quinta. Adler removed these appendages to the original structures, treating the original Manueline architecture with care and respect restoring it to the original detail, while giving additional stone structures a more contemporary touch. Everything was done in the traditional stone work of the region. Of course there were some adjustments to be made to the original architecture. The entrance, which was wide enough for a horse, had to be enlarged to allow for cars to enter. The original coat of arms which was effaced to avoid paying a tax, (except for the ornamental rope framing it) was redesigned to represent Adler's coat of arms.
