The Pousadas of Portugal are a collection of over 40 unique luxury hotels that fall into one of two categories; those that are housed in converted historic buildings, or purpose built country hotels in particularly splendid countryside. The pousadas in historic properties are perhaps the most exceptional giving you the opportunity to stay in converted castles, monasteries or even palaces.
As mentioned the standard of accommodation is in keeping with the splendour of the surroundings. Most pousadas have a four or five star rating and facilities such as swimming pools, gardens and an on-site restaurant are the norm.
Over recent years the pousadas have gone from being a state run concession to being managed by the Portuguese hotel chain, Pestana.
Whilst certainly not at the budget end of the pricing spectrum the Pousadas are not eye-wateringly expensive and good deals can often found on the Pousadas de Portugal website.
