Oceanario de Lisboa

Housed in a purpose built, ultra-modern building in the Parque das Nações, the Oceanarium is the largest in Europe. There are around 450 different species including sharks, rays, barracudas and sunfish

The Lisbon Oceanarium is one of the world’s largest aquariums and the largest indoor aquarium in Europe. It is located on a pier at the Parque das Nações, which was the exhibition grounds for the Expo 98. The Lisbon Oceanarium makes a fantastic family day out with thousands of fish, seabirds and mammals to see in one enormous central tank that is the equivalent of four Olympic sized swimming pools.

As well as fish there are a whole host of marine organisms and animals including penguins and seagulls, otters and sharks, octopuses and seahorses. With so many different animals to see it was decided to split the exhibits across four huge tanks according to their habitats; the first aquarium to incorporate world ocean habitats into one environment. These are the North Atlantic rock coastline, the Antarctic coastline, the Temperature Pacific kelp forests and the Tropical Indian coral reefs – a fantastic opportunity to see the sealife as they would be in their own natural environments.
