Our Lady of the Hill Viewpoint)
Perched upon a hillside in the Graca neighbourhood, Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, (Our Lady of the Hill), looks out over Lisbon and is the city's highest lookout point or miradouro. With such a position it means it offers uninterrupted 250 degree panoramic views across Lisbon from the stunning old quarters and castle to the downtown district of the city and beyond; it's a perfect opportunity to get some amazing photographs of the landscape and city as well as the Tagus River estuary and the Castle of Saint George.
This sight is a real hidden gem. Owing to its location just outside the main city, it means visitors often overlook making the journey up the hill. Another reason is it is situated next door to another fantastic viewpoint, the Miradouro da Graça. This means if you take time to visit the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte you're likely to be able to enjoy the fantastic views in peace. It is also shadowed by lush pine trees which adds to the peaceful atmosphere.
Amongst the grounds there is a small statue of the Virgin and the Nossa Senhora do Monte Chapel which is dedicated to Saint Gens, a martyr and ancient bishop. Although the original chapel dated back to 1147 it was destroyed by the 1755 earthquake and the current one was built in the late 1700s. This chapel is reputed to protect women during childbirth, so many come here to receive its blessing.
