Built in the 16th century as a merchants house the Casa dos Bicos is one of the most unique buildings in Lisbon. Translating to "House of the Beaks (spikes)" it is defined by the unusual pattern of raised pyramids on its facade. Beyond the spikes it is still quite an interesting building with its Manueline features and flourishes.
Whilst the building survived the 1755 earthquake its fortunes did ebb as it became a fish warehouse at some point. Today, after much restoration the building is home to the José Saramago Foundation, a cultural organisation promoting human rights and environmentalism.
The Casa dos Bicos is set at the foot of the Alfama, looking out over a small park and to the river beyond.
