When to Go to Vila Nova de Milfontes?
People come to the attractive resort of Vila Nova de Milfontes on the Southern Alentejo coast to enjoy the sandy beaches and good surf. The summer months here are hot and dry and not surprisingly this is when the crowds come. Those wishing to enjoy what's on offer here when things are calmer and quieter might find that the best time to visit is either in June or September. Winters here are generally quite mild but heavy rainfall in winter is not uncommon.
Spring
From March to April temperatures tend to hover between 10-20ᵒC (50-68ᵒF), and there is still a fairly high chance of rain. By May temperatures in the 20's ᵒC (high 60's ᵒF) are more likely, rainfall drops to an average of around 6 days in the month and there are just under 10 hours of sunshine to enjoy daily.
Summer
June can be a good time to visit, with around 3 days of rainfall in the entire month and a very pleasant 10 hours of sunshine daily. June temperatures are usually pleasantly warm without being too hot or uncomfortable. July and August see virtually no rainfall and temperatures of around 25ᵒC are the norm. The downside is that the resort can get very crowded in peak season, and at night-time it can be uncomfortably hot for those without the benefit of air-conditioning.
Autumn / Fall
Early to mid-September can be a good time to come to Vila Nova de Milfontes. The sea retains the warmth of the summer months, and there is still plenty of sunshine to enjoy. Expect 5 days of rainfall or less in the month of September. By October the chance of rainfall increases, and November usually sees a fairly high level of rainy days.
Winter
Winters here can be unpredictable. Although temperatures remain quite mild, with averages between 8-16ᵒC (46-60ᵒF) between December and February, there can be a lot of rainfall. January is the coolest, wettest month and is best avoided by those wishing to spend much time outdoors.
