Praia de Almograve

Set about 10 km to the south of Vila Nova de Milfontes is the low-key, little resort of Almograve. The coast around here is fairly rugged with high cliffs and rocky basalt outcrops jutting out into the might of the Atlantic.

The beach at Almograve is one of a number of beaches in the area but is by far the biggest and best known. At low tide a wide crescent of golden sand is revealed which is almost separated by a set of rocks towards the middle of the beach. As the tide comes in the beach does shrink somewhat but you can always find a spot of sand in the extensive dunes that back the beach.

This section of coast forms part of a national park, both protecting it and making it that little more wild. The water here is very clean, in fact the beach was awarded a Blue Flag back in 2012. It is also completely exposed to the full force of the Atlantic Ocean, which can be great news for surfers (except for the rocks!) but also mean it is potentially dangerous.

Despite its seemingly remote and natural feel Almograve beach can be fairly busy during the summer months. It is generally a great family beach and there are plenty of facilities either on the beach itself or in the village, 5 minutes walk away.
