Amália Rodrigues was Portugal's best-known fado singer for five decades.
When she died in October 1999 at the age of 79, there were three days of national mourning. A year later, the Portuguese Parliament voted to move her remains to the National Pantheon in Lisbon, to be buried alongside kings.
