Praia Grande

Praia Grande (big beach) is the main beach of the little Alentejo resort of Porto Covo. In keeping with such a pretty village the beach is equally charming with a wide stretch of golden sand backed by high cliffs.

Here at Praia Grande the Atlantic Ocean appears particularly blue and clear. It also picks up all of the swells meaning the waves here are often good for surfing. To keep things safe there is a seasonal lifeguard service to watch over the bathing area.

Unsurprisingly this is the most popular beach in the Porto Covo area. Being the best equipped and easiest to get to makes it somewhat busy during the main holiday season. At the height of the summer this may not appeal to everyone and it can be a challenge finding a clear spot to throw your towel down. However, a couple of weeks either side and Praia Grande is back to the paradise that has earned it the reputation as one of Portugal's finest beaches.
