I've never really understood the abundance of faded grandeur and overall dereliction in Portugal. I can almost get it if it was somewhere off the beaten track or in the middle of economic hard times, but I've seen places like this in some of the most desirable locations in the country.
Although things have changed a little in the past 25 years, Porto is still full of amazing buildings that seem to have been abandoned, despite the fact that the city is a tourist hotspot these days. I have to admit that I feel these run down properties add a special air to Porto that wouldn't exist if everywhere was renovated and gentrified - but it still somewhat baffles me.
This particular wreck of a house is in Massarelos, right on the riverfront on Alameda de Basílio Teles. Whilst I described it as a fixer upper I'd guess the price tag would be pretty high.
